Abstract
Description
How do we make programming education both technically accurate and pedagogically effective? Often, educators teach without deep industry exposure, while developers possess invaluable experience but little training in teaching. The panelists in this session have thought about this mismatch, they have experience of trying to do something about it and they will explore how we can elevate programming education across Africa and beyond.
Why it matters
Getting better at connecting teaching and practice makes all our learning spaces places with can attain deeper and lasting value. This includes conventional classrooms, short courses, coding bootcamps, monthly meet-ups and major conferences like PyCon Africa.
Audience
The audience for this talk will be the developers who want to teach, the teachers who want to teach programming more effectively and the community organisers who want to create more effective classes. The regular programmer will also see their daily skills and how they acquire them in new light, making them better participants in any gatherings.
