Bio

Shaun De Ponte is a Software and Data Engineer, and Co-Founder of Naughty Bean Coffee, where he combines technical execution with real-world business building. He leverages his expertise in Python, Azure, and AWS to design, build, and optimize scalable data platforms, cloud infrastructure, and full-stack web applications across a range of clients and products.

With over eight years of experience in data engineering and software development, Shaun has worked across diverse domains including Django-based web platforms, cloud-native architectures, CI/CD pipelines, and applied machine learning (NLP, OCR). His engineering approach is grounded in building production-ready systems—focusing on performance, reliability, and clean, maintainable design across both backend and frontend environments.

Shaun holds an MSc in Business Analytics from Aston University, where he specialised in Machine Learning and its application to real-world business challenges. He is also the founder and software engineer behind BrightInvoice, an open-source invoice generation platform for small businesses.

Passionate about both technology and entrepreneurship, Shaun is driven by creating systems that deliver tangible value—whether through data-driven insights, scalable software products, or customer-focused digital experiences. He is continuously exploring new tools, refining engineering practices, and collaborating with others to push the boundaries of what can be built..

From Localhost to Production: Deploying Python Web Apps on Ubuntu

You have built your new awesome app in Django, Flask, FastAPI, Sanic, but now what? How do you actually deploy it? How do you manage environment variables? How do you get SSL certificates? How do you serve static files? How do you manage your local development environment vs your production environment? How do you manage CI/CD pipelines? And if your app has asynchronous tasks or workers, this can leave you even more confused.

There are tons of tutorials online, but they are often confusing, disjointed, or focused on a specific cloud provider without really explaining what is happening underneath.

This talk is aimed at Python web developers who are comfortable building applications, but don't necessarily have a strong DevOps or infrastructure background.

We will take a step back from the usual "how do I deploy this to AWS, Azure, DigitalOcean or Hetzner?" approach and look at what deploying to a virtual machine actually means in practice. At the end of the day, regardless of the cloud provider, you are normally dealing with the same fundamental building blocks: an Ubuntu server, networking, DNS, processes, environment variables, a web server, SSL certificates, application services and CI/CD.

This talk will cover an end-to-end approach for deploying your Python web app on any virtual machine running Ubuntu, using nothing but open source software and an approach that I have been using for years.

We will go from a fresh Ubuntu virtual machine all the way to a production-ready Python web application, covering the pieces that tutorials often treat separately and showing how they all fit together.

Attendees will leave with a solid understanding of what actually happens when you deploy a Python web application, how the different components fit together, and enough practical knowledge to deploy and manage their own Python web application on Ubuntu regardless of which cloud provider they use.
