Using Python To Solve My Wedding

Description

We have two large tables and 100 guests coming to our wedding and we'll have to figure out where they'll be seated. Defining the seating chart tends to be the most enjoyable part of wedding planning, or so I was told.

It dawned on me that this is a constraint satisfaction problem (CSP); and modelling CSPs is something I've been practicing in the last two years. I can use Python to solve this problem.

Who and Why

Python is a flexible language and we can use it to model and solve formal constraint problems. Given that most of our experience with constraint problems come from interview practice not all software engineers will be aware of tools such as z3 and a language like SMTLIB2 that are used to solve these algorithmic problems in practice. If you are excited by adding new tools to your belt then this talk is for you.

Inspiration

This talk was inspired by a blog post I wrote on this topic; details of which you can find here: Seating Charts
