Bio

Vuyolwethu Mfidi, a Software Developer at the Centre for High-Performance Computing (CHPC). My journey into software engineering began in ICT support, where I developed a strong foundation in systems, users, and infrastructure before transitioning into software development. I'm passionate about Python and sharing practical lessons from building and maintaining real-world software systems.

I made my first appearance at PyConZA in 2025, where I delivered a lightning talk titled "Building a Grafana App with Streamlit." I'm excited to return and share more of what I've learned along the way.

The Gap Between Tutorials and Production: What Nobody Tells Developers

Many developers begin their Python journey through tutorials, where the focus is on learning syntax, solving small problems, and building simple applications. However, the transition from tutorials to production software introduces a completely different set of challenges that are often not covered. Writing code that works is only the beginning; professional software development requires understanding maintainability, reliability, collaboration, debugging, documentation, testing, and the realities of supporting software used by others.

This talk is aimed at beginner to intermediate Python developers, students, and anyone transitioning from learning Python to contributing to real-world projects. Drawing from practical experience developing and supporting software systems, the talk will explore the gap between tutorial-based learning and production environments. Attendees will learn about the engineering practices that help transform small scripts and projects into maintainable software, including structuring applications, writing cleaner code, handling errors, using logs effectively, understanding user requirements, and working with existing codebases.

The goal of this talk is to help developers recognize that becoming a professional Python developer involves more than mastering the language itself. By sharing common challenges, lessons learned, and practical approaches, attendees will leave with some better understanding of the skills and mindset needed to build software that is not only functional, but also reliable, understandable, and valuable to the people who use and maintain it.
