Applied AI for Urban Governance: Practical Use Cases from Open Cities Lab

This session will explore how AI can be applied to real urban governance challenges, moving beyond hype to focus on practical use cases in municipal decision-making, service delivery, public participation, data governance, and digital public infrastructure.

Presented by Wasim Moosa, CTO at Open Cities Lab, the session will draw on OCL’s decade of experience working with municipalities and public-sector partners to build data and digital systems that are grounded in real government workflows. It will look at how AI can support officials to analyse and summarise complex data, identify service delivery priorities, improve access to public information, and strengthen evidence-based decision-making.

The session will also consider what needs to be in place for AI to be useful and responsible in government contexts, including good data foundations, interoperability, institutional readiness, privacy, transparency, and human-centred design. Practical examples will be drawn from OCL’s work in municipal data strategy, service delivery tools, public participation, asset management, and civic information systems.

My Audience is anyone keen to learn how AI is used in the public sector and Python developers who are interested in practical AI use cases.
